A prominent engineer, whose contribution in India was important contribution. Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshgundam Visvesvaraya (M. Visvesvaraya) was a renowned engineer and politician. He played an important role in the formation of modern India. Given his contribution in the creation of India, he was embellished with the ‘Bharat Ratna’ of the country’s highest honor in 1955. In India, his birthday is celebrated as Engineer’s Day.

He was born in Chikkaballapur in Kolar district on 15 September 1860 in a Brahmin family. His father’s name was Srinivasa Shastri and mother’s name was Venkachamma. His father Srinivasa Shastri was a Sanskrit scholar and Ayurvedic physician. When the child Visveshwariah was only 12 years old, his father died.

After getting the first position in the LCE and FCE examination of 1883, he introduced his abilities and in view of this, the Government of Maharashtra appointed him at the post of Assistant Engineer in Nashik.

M. Visvesvaraya implemented a complex irrigation system in Deccan. They also made many projects successful in the absence of resources and high technology. Among them were Krishn Rajasagar Dam, Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works, Mysore Sandal Oil and Soap Factory, Mysore University and Bank of Mysore. These achievements were possible only through the hard work of MV.

In view of his contribution, the Maharaja of Mysore appointed him Diwan, the Chief Minister of the state in 1912. As a Dewan of Mysore, he worked tirelessly for the educational and industrial development of the state. In 1918, he retired as the Diwan of Mysore. After that, Visvesvaraya died on April 14, 1962, at the age of 101.
